A whale’s tale

All along Route 66, “giants” beckoned travelers as they cruised along the Mother Road to explore one roadside attraction or another.  Perhaps none of these giants says “Route 66” as much as the Blue Whale of Catoosa.  Built in the early 1970s as an anniversary gift for his wife, a collector of whale figurines, Hugh Davis’ creation was open, initially, only to family members.  In the mid-1970s, the family opened it to the public.  It quickly  became a favorite swimming hole for travelers and locals.  You can almost hear the kids in the backs of cars zipping by, begging Dad to stop.  After a hours on the road hearing the familiar refrain, “Daddy are we there yet?  Daddy are we there yet?” I’m guessing that most parents were only too eager to pull over to let the kids (and themselves) unwind a bit before hitting the road again.
